What is Yoga Therapy?

Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools - postures/exercises, breathwork, meditation techniques, and more - to address an individual's physical, mental, and emotional needs. Many people first learn about yoga through its physical practices, but a common misconception is that the discipline is all about stretching or movement. In fact, yoga therapy can help people who can't move at all, as well as active individuals!

The yogic model of health is unique because it addresses every aspect of life rather than considering each body part of system separately.

Yoga therapy is a safe way of working with the natural capacity of your body and mind to optimize well-being. This approach can help with a range of concerns:

Pain, including low-back pain, arthritis, PMS, and other types of chronic pain such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
Neurologic issues and complications of stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Mental health, including concerns like anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, insomnia, and others
Major illness like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease
Healthy aging, including osteoporosis and fall prevention

Yoga therapy can also support people who are dealing with stress, and those who simply want to increase their well-being and overall health.

"I had a gradual release of tension and better understanding of how past trauma has contributed to my physical health. The releasing of tension in my hips was a totally different focus than traditional PTs and OTs had identified since my pain manifested in my shoulders and neck. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm sure glad I did it!"

"Working with Alyssa not only helped me feel validated with the symptoms I was experiencing, but actually provided me with options to address my concerns.  She tailors her services to your individual needs and employs a wide variety of techniques to ensure you truly find relief and begin to be YOU again.  I would urge anyone who believes their current state is just 'how it is' to explore one-on-one therapy with Alyssa to return to being your true, best self!

Mentorship for Yoga and Wellness Professionals

Are you looking for support to help become a more confident and skillful yoga or wellness professional?

Do you….

  • need help safely adapting the practice for special populations and individuals?

  • have an interest in the anatomy and science of the poses, along with a respect for the rich, ancient philosophy?

  • want help developing effective and successful yoga and wellness sessions for their clients (including online format)?

Who is this for?

  • Yoga professionals that want individualized help making their practice safe, adaptive, and therapeutic for joint limiting and pain conditions (like arthritis, injuries, surgeries, MS, Parkinson's, dementia, and stroke recovery.)

We will work together so you can confidently adapt yoga for your student populations with arthritis and related chronic pain conditions. We can also work on marketing your skills and making connections with healthcare professionals accurately with evidence-based claims and materials.

I have received extensive mentoring myself and can't put the value into words.

When I started teaching yoga as a therapy, I learned so much. At first, I had no idea what I was doing and felt lost. With the help of my mentors, I now feel confident working with special populations.

Also, when I first started my business, I never asked for help because I felt like it cost too much and believed very much in DIY. However, in retrospect, I should have reached out to people who had been there way earlier! There were rookie mistakes I made that could have been avoided. The investment actually ended up saving me loads of time and energy.

These sessions are 100% individualized for your needs. Currently taking a limited number of new yoga teachers and wellness professionals for mentorship.

  • 90-minute initial consultation via Zoom, Skype or Facetime

  • Three (3) 60-minute follow up sessions (to be used within 3 months from beginning of mentorship)

  • Clear action list between calls

  • Regular check-ins and email support between sessions

  • Recordings of all sessions

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.
